Welcome to the 2008 Mildura Writers' Festival

2008 Mildura Writers' Festival Wraps Up!

The Mildura Writers’ Festival held in mid July was a sell out success with waiting lists for most events and contented capacity crowds. Guest authors and audiences departed on Sunday night with feedback indicating that the Festival is gaining in its reputation as one of the best in the country. No doubt because of its conviviality, friendliness, focus on poetry and that the writers stay the entire time and along with guests begin and continue a conversation over three days, a glass of wine (or two) and seasonal regional food.

Highlights of the Festival include:

- Awarding of the Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal to Sonya Hartnett who joins a formidable list of Australian authors who have won the award over the past 12 years.
- David Malouf presenting the La Trobe Lecture Series with ‘What is happening in Australian Culture today’.
- Stefano de Pieri’s very successful Shared Table Dinner where allocated captains carved a fabulous roast for their table
- Guests Sarah Day and Ronald Sharp’s magical trip with a traditional owner to Mungo National Park the day after the Festival
- Patron, Les Murray giving us two new words that have just entered the Australian lexicon ‘audiation’ and ‘shart’
- An insightful session where the guests shared a childhood memory that shaped them as a writer.
